Beat the Clock

Beat the Clock isn't so much a lesson plan as it is just an idea for a little competition with learning thrown in. Middle Schoolers love to compete! Normally, I discourage competition unless it's in some form of positive nature. This activity suits the bill.

Directions:

  1. Select a list of words, such as the weekly spelling words or a vocabulary list from a content area and print the words on flashcards.
  2. Arrange the words in a pocket chart so all are easily seen.
  3. Invite a student to come to the chart and read the words as rapidly as he/she is able while you time them using a stop watch.
  4. Write the time on the board.
  5. Rearrange the order of the words in the chart.
  6. Challenge the other students to Beat the Clock time of the first student.
  7. Continue in this manner for several minutes or until no one can beat a given time.
  8. Award the winner a small prize, such as bonus points on an upcoming test.
Your students get practice reading and pronouncing their words while enjoying themselves.
