Nursery Rhyme Rhetoric




To give your students practice in identifying common nursery rhyme titles and practice some clever vocabulary manipulations, present them with these tricky titles:

Identify all of the nursery rhymes from the clues.

  1. Triplet felines who can't keep track of their clothing.
  2. Irreparable broken egg.
  3. Small seated girl who is scared of insects.
  4. Hungry singing boy.
  5. Young forgetful shepherd girl.
  6. Swift boy who leaps over flames.
  7. Musical feline and dancing dishes.
  8. Elderly woman with hungry dog and empty cabinets.
  9. Clumsy people on an errand to a well.
  10. Elderly, happy monarch who smoked and ate a lot.
  11. Small boy who eats his pies with his hands.
  12. Elderly woman with unique living quarters.
  13. Cheap, freshly baked pastry.
  14. Tired shepherd boy with a trumpet.
  15. Maternal game bird.

To create a learning center activity for this idea, simply write or print the titles on the front of heavy cardstock and the answers on the back. Laminate the cards for durability. Place them on a ring or in an envelope and allow students to work with the cards during free time or a specified center time.
