Soapy Writing

Soapy Writing is a fun, motivational set of writing topics that can be utilized as a writing center or as a whole class activity. A variety of topics are included that range from brainstorming lists to writing directions for a created project. I developed this activity while taking a summer workshop class, Options Through Learning Centers, at Kent State University Ashtabula Campus in 1986.

Materials:

Empty card box; white construction paper; paint, colored tape, or contact paper; glue; markers or crayons; index cards

Assembly:

  1. Paint or cover with contact paper, the sides of the top of the card box. I chose to use colored tape since it was a quicker method.
  2. Measure the top of the card box and draw a rectangle the same size on the white paper. Cut it out and decorate it to resemble a popular soap package, using the appropriate colors and lettering.
  3. Affix the label to the top of the card box with glue or tape. The container is now completed.

Activity Cards:

On an index card write the following directions:

Affix this card to the inside of the cover of the card box.

On separate index cards, write the following activity directions:

  • Imagine you are trying to market a new kind of soap. Write down all the names that would be suitable for your new product.
  • Does soap always have to be packaged in a paper wrapper or cardboard box? Draw many new and unusual ways to package soap.
  • Make a plan for an art project which involves soap carving. Write the step-by-step directions including sketches of the project in progress.
  • How would you feel if soap was rationed and you were able to take a bath or shower only once a week? Write a paragraph telling of your feelings.
  • What if we discovered that there is a poisonous subtance in all soap. Write a paragraph or two telling of the effects of this discovery.
Place these cards inside the box and your center is complete. If you choose to use these activities as a whole group experience, simply select a topic for writing and read it to the class, allowing them ample time to complete.
